Isaiah 11:1-9

New International Version

The Branch From Jesse

11 A shoot^(A) will come up from the stump^(B) of Jesse;^(C)
    from his roots a Branch^(D) will bear fruit.^(E)
²The Spirit^(F) of the Lord will rest on him—
    the Spirit of wisdom^(G) and of understanding,
    the Spirit of counsel and of might,^(H)
    the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—
³and he will delight in the fear^(I) of the Lord.

He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,^(J)
    or decide by what he hears with his ears;^(K)
⁴but with righteousness^(L) he will judge the needy,^(M)
    with justice^(N) he will give decisions for the poor^(O) of the earth.
He will strike^(P) the earth with the rod of his mouth;^(Q)
    with the breath^(R) of his lips he will slay the wicked.^(S)
⁵Righteousness will be his belt^(T)
    and faithfulness^(U) the sash around his waist.^(V)

⁶The wolf will live with the lamb,^(W)
    the leopard will lie down with the goat,
the calf and the lion and the yearling^[a] together;
    and a little child will lead them.
⁷The cow will feed with the bear,
    their young will lie down together,
    and the lion will eat straw like the ox.^(X)
⁸The infant^(Y) will play near the cobra’s den,
    and the young child will put its hand into the viper’s^(Z) nest.
⁹They will neither harm nor destroy^(AA)
    on all my holy mountain,^(AB)
for the earth^(AC) will be filled with the knowledge^(AD) of the Lord
    as the waters cover the sea.

Korah, Dathan and Abiram

16 Korah^(A) son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and certain Reubenites—Dathan and Abiram^(B), sons of Eliab,^(C) and On son of Peleth—became insolent^[a] ²and rose up against Moses.^(D) With them were 250 Israelite men, well-known community leaders who had been appointed members of the council.^(E) ³They came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron^(F) and said to them, “You have gone too far! The whole community is holy,^(G) every one of them, and the Lord is with them.^(H) Why then do you set yourselves above the Lord’s assembly?”^(I)

⁴When Moses heard this, he fell facedown.^(J) ⁵Then he said to Korah and all his followers: “In the morning the Lord will show who belongs to him and who is holy,^(K) and he will have that person come near him.^(L) The man he chooses^(M) he will cause to come near him. ⁶You, Korah, and all your followers^(N) are to do this: Take censers^(O) ⁷and tomorrow put burning coals^(P) and incense^(Q) in them before the Lord. The man the Lord chooses^(R) will be the one who is holy.^(S) You Levites have gone too far!”

⁸Moses also said to Korah, “Now listen, you Levites! ⁹Isn’t it enough^(T) for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the rest of the Israelite community and brought you near himself to do the work at the Lord’s tabernacle and to stand before the community and minister to them?^(U) ¹⁰He has brought you and all your fellow Levites near himself, but now you are trying to get the priesthood too.^(V) ¹¹It is against the Lord that you and all your followers have banded together. Who is Aaron that you should grumble^(W) against him?^(X)”

¹²Then Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram,^(Y) the sons of Eliab. But they said, “We will not come!^(Z) ¹³Isn’t it enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey^(AA) to kill us in the wilderness?^(AB) And now you also want to lord it over us!^(AC) ¹⁴Moreover, you haven’t brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey^(AD) or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards.^(AE) Do you want to treat these men like slaves^[b]?^(AF) No, we will not come!^(AG)”

¹⁵Then Moses became very angry^(AH) and said to the Lord, “Do not accept their offering. I have not taken so much as a donkey^(AI) from them, nor have I wronged any of them.”

¹⁶Moses said to Korah, “You and all your followers are to appear before the Lord tomorrow—you and they and Aaron.^(AJ) ¹⁷Each man is to take his censer and put incense in it—250 censers in all—and present it before the Lord. You and Aaron are to present your censers also.^(AK)” ¹⁸So each of them took his censer,^(AL) put burning coals and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the tent of meeting. ¹⁹When Korah had gathered all his followers in opposition to them^(AM) at the entrance to the tent of meeting, the glory of the Lord^(AN) appeared to the entire assembly.

Hebrews 13:7-17

New International Version

⁷Remember your leaders,^(A) who spoke the word of God^(B) to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate^(C) their faith. ⁸Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.^(D)

⁹Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings.^(E) It is good for our hearts to be strengthened^(F) by grace, not by eating ceremonial foods,^(G) which is of no benefit to those who do so.^(H) ¹⁰We have an altar from which those who minister at the tabernacle^(I) have no right to eat.^(J)

¹¹The high priest carries the blood of animals into the Most Holy Place as a sin offering,^(K) but the bodies are burned outside the camp.^(L) ¹²And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate^(M) to make the people holy^(N) through his own blood.^(O) ¹³Let us, then, go to him^(P) outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore.^(Q) ¹⁴For here we do not have an enduring city,^(R) but we are looking for the city that is to come.^(S)

¹⁵Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice^(T) of praise—the fruit of lips^(U) that openly profess his name. ¹⁶And do not forget to do good and to share with others,^(V) for with such sacrifices^(W) God is pleased.

¹⁷Have confidence in your leaders^(X) and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you^(Y) as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.
